The Pleasures Of Having A Pet

Getting a pet is a pretty big deal and a serious commitment, but there is nothing wrong with that. In fact it’s a very good thing to want that as its is not only a responsibility, but adds a sense of purpose outside of ones self.  It will be two years on March 10th since my, Ruby Cavalier King Charles Cavalier, named Theadora arrived in NYC.  Picking her up at the LGA the poor thing had soiled herself in the crate and was frightened to bits! Since she was so meek and tiny I took her out and placed her in my large inner coat pocket.  I didn’t care how soiled she was, that was my baby and no body puts baby in a dirty crate! After getting her home she was certainly bewildered so much so, that she could barely walk. We spend the first day getting her fed, hydrated and did some bonding.. The initial training period was a bit stressful, because a puppy always has to be watched and corrected immediately and being single it was all up to me. Not to mention all the messes that will need to be cleaned up. I think that’s why puppies are so cute, because they can certainly be terrors or super sneaky without a watchful eye.  But with consistent stern and gentle training we made it through those early days.

My quality of life walking the city streets has risen since having her. I don’t know what it is about this girl, but she brings a smile to almost every face that sees her. That furry face, big eyes coupled with her tale is so infectious, that one time, even an ex con with a prison tattoo to tear drop on his face melted at the sight of her. “She looks like a little Teddy Bear!” he said with a MIke Tyson lisp.   I truly love seeing smiling people and so happy that my Theadora brings so much happiness to others. She also helps me gage the character of other others. I pay attention to her movements and actions and from time to time there is someone or something that doesn’t mesh right. Thea is my soul puppy and don’t want to be around anyone who has an “issue” or is threatened by her. Yes, it’s happened.

With Theadora, I always have to factor her well being in whatever plans I make.  She even has pet insurance! Which is recommended to have in NYC. To me, a dog or pet is like family. They require care and attention like any relationship. I truly take a loving pride in bathing her and carefully cleaning her ears and eyes. Or making sure her water bowl is clean and fresh and her paws are wiped after a walk. To some, this may be daunting and sound like a lot of work. Well, it can be daunting some days and it is certainly work regardless, Thea keeps me going which helps me gage myself on a deeper level. If I’m not taking pleasure in the little things anymore than that means something in my life has to change and it doesn’t have anything to do with having a Dog. It has everything to do with growing and expanding my life circumstances to which my four-legged fur ball is apart of that journey with me. Before I got her, I made a paw-mise to the commitment for her entire life. With maturity and my wild days and nights behind, I will do what ever I need to do to provide a life that allows me a dog. Without even knowing it she has pushed me to be brave in many areas of my life and test my daily accountability. Most importantly she provides me with the day to day love, loyalty and companionship that has brought me more joy than can be expressed.

After all DOG IS GOD spelt backwards. #woof!

Our Fur Babies Bring us back to nature with balance

-There are little things she does that remind me to stretch more and not just when doing yoga.

-Take time to play and be silly

-Get fresh air on walks

-If I’m on the computer to long she will “paw away” my hands and to be honest she is probably right.

-Walking her allows me to be more social by being an icebreaker with other people and other pups.

-Science says pets are good for our health and I believe it to be true. I certainly smile and laugh a lot more then I would with out her and she does calm me noticeably during our cuddle sessions.

-She evokes my creative side by snapping pictures and video for her Instagram page. Yeah I know it sounds weird having a pet Instagram, but damn let me be a proud Mummy! @theadorable_theadora
